A room dimension in feet, a road distance in miles, a fabric length in yards — and the other side of the conversation uses metres. This free length converter switches between millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres, inches, feet, yards and miles instantly, using the exact international definitions. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and no signup is needed.

3Read the result

The converted length appears at once; swap the units to convert back without retyping.

Why this length converter can be trusted for real measurements

Built to be free, private, and exact — right in your browser.

Exact bridge between systems

One inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres by international agreement, and every imperial-to-metric factor follows from it.

No rounded shortcuts in the maths

Factors like 1 foot = 0.3048 metres and 1 mile = 1,609.344 metres are used in full, with rounding only for display.

Both systems, all scales

Metric steps by tens while imperial steps by 12, 3 and 1,760; the tool handles both so you never have to chain conversions by hand.

Honest about the old survey foot

The retired US survey foot differs by about two parts per million and is not used here; the tool uses the international foot throughout.

The feet-and-inches trap

Where length conversions most often go wrong.

Decimal feet are not feet and inches. A height written as 5.5 feet means 5 feet 6 inches, not 5 feet 5 inches, because the 0.5 is half a foot. Convert the whole decimal value first, then split the result into feet and inches if you need that format.

Round only at the end. Estimating with 3.3 feet per metre is fine for a rough guess, but chaining rounded values through several steps drifts quickly. Use the exact factor for anything you will cut, build or buy.

Check the unit, not just the number. A result of 1.83 could be metres, feet or yards depending on the target unit, so read the unit label before acting on the number.

Length Converter FAQs

Multiply by 0.3048: 5 feet is 5 × 0.3048 = 1.524 metres.

No. A yard is 0.9144 metres, slightly shorter than a metre, so the two are not interchangeable.

Exactly 5,280 feet, which is also 1,760 yards.
