A flat listed in square feet, a plot priced per acre, a field measured in hectares — area units hide a trap that length units do not. This free area converter switches between square millimetres, square metres, hectares, square feet, acres and square miles, squaring the length factors correctly instead of reusing them. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and no signup is needed.

How to use this area converter

Three quick steps — value, units, result.

1Enter the area

Type the number you have, such as 100, 2.5 or 1,000.

2Choose the two units

Pick from square metres, hectares, square feet, acres, square yards or square miles.

3Read the result

The converted area appears at once, so a listing, a plot size or a floor plan is comparable in seconds.

Why this area converter squares the factor instead of copying it

Built to be free, private, and exact — right in your browser.

The squared-factor rule

One metre is 3.28084 feet, but one square metre is 10.7639 square feet — the length factor squared — and using 3.28 for area is the classic error.

Land units that actually match use

An acre is 43,560 square feet (4,046.86 square metres) and a hectare is 10,000 square metres (2.471 acres), the two units land and farming actually trade in.

No length-area mix-ups

The tool converts area to area only, so a length in metres can never be silently treated as square metres.

Rounded for display, exact underneath

Factors are used in full and rounded only when shown, so a large plot does not drift by whole square metres through rounding.

Square, not linear: the one area rule to remember

Why area answers surprise people who converted length correctly.

Doubling a side quadruples the area. A room 2 metres by 2 metres is 4 square metres; a room 4 metres by 4 metres is 16 square metres, not 8. Anyone who doubles the length factor instead of squaring it will understate the larger room by half.

The same trap runs in reverse. A plot described as twice the area is not twice as long on each side — each side grows by about 1.41 times, the square root of two.

When in doubt, convert through square metres. Take the area into square metres first, then out to the target unit, rather than converting a side length and then squaring a rounded number.

Area Converter FAQs

Short, direct answers to the questions readers ask most.

10.7639 square feet. That is the length factor 3.28084 squared, not 3.28084 itself.

2.471 acres. The other way, one acre is 0.404686 hectares.

4,046.86 square metres, which is exactly 43,560 square feet.

Because area factors are length factors squared. Every length step you skip or round gets squared too, so small errors grow fast.

In everyday speech they are used for the same thing, but be careful: a square mile is 640 acres, while a shape one mile on each side is the same area only if it is actually square.
